Celebrate the new National Park extension at the 2016 Festival!

The Yorkshire Dales National Park is to be increased in size by about a quarter - adding 188 square miles to it's area.

Ride2stride 2016 will help celebrate the extensions by offering walks to explore some of the new areas included in the Park, which will now extend north almost as far as Appleby!

Yorkshire Dales National Park extended

To the north the Park will take in the Cumbrian areas of the Orton Fells, the northern Howgill Fells, Wild Boar Fell and Mallerstang.

The new extensions will formally be included in August next year.

Dates for Ride2stride 2017

We are delighted to announce that Ride2stride 2017 will run from Tuesday April 25th to Bank Holiday Monday May 1st.

No dogs other than registered assistance dogs, will be accepted on Ride2stride walks in future.

Lambs

We know how much people enjoy walking with their dogs but spring is a crucial time of year for wildlife and livestock in the Yorkshire Dales. Fields are full of young lambs and newly turned out cattle and the fells are home to ground nesting birds.

The festival attracts large numbers of walkers and this decision has been taken in the interest of safety and enjoyment for everyone. It does not affect the walks led by the participating organisations for the rest of the year.

We hope you will understand and respect this decision and we look forward to welcoming walkers to Ride2stride 2017.

5th Ride2stride draws to a close

The fifth annual Settle-Carlisle Walking Festival finally draws to a close after a week of difficult weather conditions but with probably the best turnout of the festival series so far.

Walkers cross Wold Fell in snow

Over 100 walkers turned up at Settle station for the launch event, joining one of three walks on offer. The festival began in bright sunshine, but over the week walkers have faced all 4 seasons, with bitterly cold winds and both heavy rain and snow interspersed with periods of bright sunshine.

Many festival goers have taken holiday accommodation in the area, and have been treated to additional special events such as the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race and the Three Peaks Fell Race.

It's been a great success, but the growing numbers of walkers raises its own problem for the future - perhaps the best kind of problem organisers have to resolve.

Can the festival cope with this growing popularity? Watch this space....

Rail closure north of Appleby

Following heavy rains a landslip at Eden Brows near Armathwaite has led to the closure of the Settle-Carlisle line north of Appleby.

Landslip at Eden Brows

Repairs are underway and Network Rail are keeping us fully informed of progress. The work, however, is expected to last several months.

Trains are running pretty much as normal between Leeds and Appleby at the moment, with busses linking further north to Carlisle. Please check the Settle-Carlisle website for the latest timetable news.

None of the events for Ride2stride 2016 should be affected, though clearly access from north of Appleby may prove more difficult.

People planning to come to the festival should continue to plan as normal. We will update further nearer the time.

Jericho - new ITV drama

A new TV drama based around the building of the Ribblehead Viaduct in the 1870s is premiered on ITV on Thursday, January 7th.

The eight-part series is set in an imagined version of one of the notorious navvy shanty towns - Jericho - under the shadow of Ingleborough and Whernside on the desolate Blea Moor. In the drama Ribblehead is renamed "Culverdale".

The Ribblehead Viaduct, the longest on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, was built between 1869 and 1875. It required 6,000 workers to construct the line with at least 200 hundred fatalities through engineering accidents or smallpox, most of who are buried in the nearby cemetery at Chapel-le-Dale.

Tour de Yorkshire joins Ride2stride

Tour de Yorkshire 2015

The 2016 Tour de Yorkshire cycle race is joining Ride2stride on Friday, April 29th with a spectacular first stage finish in Settle!

This will prove an added bonus for walkers and supporters of the Settle-Carlisle Walking Festival, with plenty already going on in the popular Dales market town: three walks finish there on that day, there's music in the Royal Oak from late afternoon AND a fascinating talk in the evening.

Though Settle will be busy in the afternoon, it is expected that the early morning trains from Leeds should cope, so walkers should have no problem.
