FESTIVAL REVIEW 2012

Ribblehead walk

I am just back from a whole week away on the Ride2Stride Festival of Walking and Music along the Settle to Carlisle line.

This was a resounding success. There were talks, walks and music every day from May 1-7.

We led walks on the opening day Tuesday (Penny’s flapjacks went down a treat), Thursday and three on the Saturday. All were very well supported by visitors to the area as well as by ourselves. On some walks there were 30/33 walkers. There was a good mix of members, local people and visitors.

The Festival brought people into the Dales from a wide range of places; Anglesey, Berkshire, Darlington, Barnsley, Ormskirk, Tyneside, Sheffield and New Zealand to mention but a few. Local accommodation was full and some were camping. The trains were busy as were the cafes.

The music in the pubs was buzzing all day and in the evenings after the trains had gone. One walker carried his guitar in his rucksack and joined the music at the end of the day all week!

Comments from those who took part included “we must do this again next year”. A good time was had by all. Our thanks go to Chris and Tony Grogan whose idea this was and to all who put the festival together. It was a great way to promote our beautiful Dales, local culture and the local music scene as well as the walking, not to forget the scenic Settle and Carlisle line.

It was a great opportunity to make people aware of regular walks led from the train by both ourselves and FoSCL and the music of the Three Peaks Folk Club. I personally had a great time… and am looking forward to it all happening again!

End to great festival week

The second ride2stride walking festival ended as it started, under a blazing sun.

ride2stride 2013 draws to an end - a great week for walkers and Bradford City football fans alike

And as weary walkers made their way for the train home on Bank Holiday Monday, they could reflect on a great week for festival goers and Bradford City football fans alike.

Our thanks go to all the volunteers who have made the festival possible - the walk leaders, the musicians, the speakers and of course, everyone who came and took part.

Will there be a ride2stride 2014? What do you think....?

Sunshine for launch of ride2stride 2013

Bright sunshine greeted walkers as they gathered on Settle Station for the start of this years Settle-Carlisle Walking Festival.

Town Mayor Joe Lord welmomes walkers to ride2stride 2013

After the welcoming voices of the Settle Singing for Pleasure Ensemble and a few warm words from the town Mayor Joe Lord, around 75 walkers set off on 3 different walks.

With an interesting evening talk from local farmer and conservationist Tom Lord on the butterflies to be found on his farm, the evening was rounded off with music at the Craven Arms, Gigglewick.

Another great start to the festival, and with the weather promising to keep smiling, we look to be in for a good week!

Music train for ride2stride week

Only 4 days to go to the start of this years Ride2stride Festival and everyone is getting excited.

Music Train

There’s a great added attraction for festival goers on Saturday May 4th.

The first of this year’s Skipton to Ribblehead Music Trains is running on Saturday night. There’s music from the Worth Valley Stompers and the Hall Brothers and a choice of real ales for sale.

As the Music Train forms part of the regular 9pm train back to Leeds, walkers who have enjoyed walks around Ribblehead during the day and spent the evening in the Station Inn with the fabulous Ride2stride musicians can join in the party on the train home.

Banner goes up on Settle Shambles

New ride2stride banner on The Shambles

One of our new ride2stride banners went up in Settle today, right in the town centre high up on the Shambles.

The 8 foot by 3 foot banner - one of two sponsored by Booths Supermarket, took pride of place in the final fortnight's run-up to the second Settle-Carlisle Walking Festival.

Another banner is expected to go up soon somewhere in Appleby. Keep watching....

The T&A article, Feb 16 2013

The Bradford Telegraph & Argus carries a great centre page spread today (Saturday) about the festival. The T&A is one the biggest regional papers, covering the Bradford Metropolitan district - including Airedale along the line of the Settle-Carlisle railway.

And it's an easy train connection from Bradford.

Ride2stride 2013

The dates and programme for this years Settle-Carlisle Walking Festival are now finalised. The festival runs from:

Tuesday April 30 - Monday May 6, 2013

Get it in your diaries now!

As well as the usual wide range of walks from the line, we have some easier ones, such as a nice gentle 5 mile walk around the Ribble floodplain from Long Preston to see breeding wading birds with the Yorkshire Dales Millenium Trust and RSPB.

The Ribble wetlands

There's also some tough ones, such as a fast-paced 18-miler to one of Yorkshire's natural lakes - Malham Tarn - with the North Yorkshire branch of the Long Distance Walkers Association.

And of course, the best folk music every evening at a different venue along the line, as well as some fascinating illustrated talks!

And all for the price of a train ticket!
