Ribblehead walk

I am just back from a whole week away on the Ride2Stride Festival of Walking and Music along the Settle to Carlisle line.

This was a resounding success. There were talks, walks and music every day from May 1-7.

We led walks on the opening day Tuesday (Penny’s flapjacks went down a treat), Thursday and three on the Saturday. All were very well supported by visitors to the area as well as by ourselves. On some walks there were 30/33 walkers. There was a good mix of members, local people and visitors.

The Festival brought people into the Dales from a wide range of places; Anglesey, Berkshire, Darlington, Barnsley, Ormskirk, Tyneside, Sheffield and New Zealand to mention but a few. Local accommodation was full and some were camping. The trains were busy as were the cafes.

The music in the pubs was buzzing all day and in the evenings after the trains had gone. One walker carried his guitar in his rucksack and joined the music at the end of the day all week!

Comments from those who took part included “we must do this again next year”. A good time was had by all. Our thanks go to Chris and Tony Grogan whose idea this was and to all who put the festival together. It was a great way to promote our beautiful Dales, local culture and the local music scene as well as the walking, not to forget the scenic Settle and Carlisle line.

It was a great opportunity to make people aware of regular walks led from the train by both ourselves and FoSCL and the music of the Three Peaks Folk Club. I personally had a great time… and am looking forward to it all happening again!

The end of a great festival week!

Ride2stride 2012 is finally over. It's been a week of great walks, fascinating talks and wonderful music.

Musicians from the 3 Peaks Folk Club entertain at the Station Inn, Ribblehead.

After a very windy first day the weather was generally kind and each of the 35 events attracted a good crowd. People stayed in pubs, B&Bs, hostels and holiday cottages along the length of the line just to take part in the festival, and as the week went on began to greet each other like old friends.

Feedback is still coming in from the 13 groups that came together to create ride2stride, but generally the feeling is that it's been a great success.

Ride2stride 2012 might be over - roll on 2013....

Festival off to a great start

ride2stride got off to a great Mayday start today as walkers and singers crowded onto the platform at Settle Station for the launch of the first Settle-Carlisle Walking Festival.

Walkers gather on Settle Station for the launch of ride2stride

The rain held off as Chris Grogan welcomed walkers from the morning train on behalf of the festival committee.

Diane Taylor of Friends of DalesRail and Colin Speakman of the Yorkshire Dales Society both said a few words before leading off the first two walks of the week.

Singers from the Settle Singing for Pleasure group sang classics such as “Settle-Carlisle” and “Raindrops keep falling on my head” as the walkers headed for the fells.

It looks like being a great week!

Change to Dales High Way walk

Details of a walk in the printed programme have changed, but the start details remain the same.

Chris Grogan passing Attermire ScarA Taste of A Dales High Way (Sunday, May 6th, 10.10 am from Settle Station), was advertised as including a bus ride to Malham, but changes in the bus timetable have meant this had to be cut.

Chris Grogan - committee member of the Yorkshire Dales Society and Secretary of the Friends of A Dales High Way – who is leading the walk, said: “It’s a shame about the bus, but we’re taking a circular route instead, climbing up past Jubillee Caves and on to join the Dales High Way above Langscar Gate, for the return passing Kirkby Fell and the stunning Attermire Scar. It’s a little longer at 10 miles total, but a bit easier going, so it should be a great day’s walk.”

The 10 mile walk is described as moderate, but with a fairly steep ascent at the beginning and similarly steep descent at the end. Meet at Settle Station at 10.10 am to meet the 09.00 am train from Leeds. Food and drink for a full day, waterproofs and good boots please. Finish in plenty of time for refreshments in Settle and the 18.19 return train to Leeds.

Everest mountaineer to launch walks

Everest mountaineer Alan Hinkes OBE, a former pupil of Northallerton GrammarAlan Hinkes - photo (c) AH school, will launch two guided walks from Garsdale station on Friday May 4th, both to Hawes, as part of the ride2stride festival.

Alan Hinkes is the first Briton to climb the world's highest mountains. These are the 14 8000m peaks, all of which are in the 'death zone', where human survival rate is measured in hours. They are the most dangerous mountains on the planet. Alan is part of an exclusive club of only 12 people alive who have achieved this feat, which is the same number of people who have stood on the moon. Many have perished attempting this challenge.

Both the 10 mile strenuous walk, and the shorter 6 mile moderate walk leave Garsdale Station at 10.21, returning by bus.
