Rock for Ribblehead Viaduct.
A talk by Bill Fraser.
Wednesday, May 2, 14.30. Friends Meeting House, Settle. £3.00 includes light refreshments.

While Ribblehead Viaduct dates from 1875 the materials it is made of are a great deal older. In this fascinating illustrated talk Bill Fraser looks at the rocks and materials used in its construction, when and in what environments they were formed and where they were quarried.

Bill Fraser, although retired from a career teaching and lecturing geology, is active in geological conservation as well as giving talks and leading field excursions for geology groups and other interested parties. For many years he has led geology themed walks along the Settle-Carlisle corridor. He is currently secretary of the Leeds Geological Association and also a member of the Yorkshire Geological Society.

There is an associated walk on Thursday from Ribblehead.

Adam Sedgwick, Geologist and Dalesman.
A talk by Colin Speakman.
Friday, May 4, 14.15. Friends Meeting House, Settle. £3.00 includes light refreshments.

Following the morning walk Colin Speakman, well known author and countryside campaigner, will talk about the life and achievements of Dent’s famous pioneer geologist.

Colin Speakman’s classic study of the great Dentdale geologist Adam Sedgwick was republished, in partnership with the Yorkshire Geological Society, in January 2018. Colin’s talk will trace the life story of this remarkable Dalesman and why his work as a teacher, an interpreter of landscape, and historian of the Yorkshire Dales is as relevant today as it was in the 19th century.

There is an associated short walk from Settle in the morning.
