FRIDAY, MAY 3, 2013:
Please note there is
no train connection from the Wensleydale Railway for this event,
which is part of the Settle-Carlisle Walking Festival (www.ride2stride.org.uk).
No need to book the walk but packed lunch, drinks and strong footwear
are required. If you intend
to use the Little White Bus, please advise us - 01969 667400. Dales &
District bus services from Bedale, Leyburn, Aysgarth, Askrigg etc to
Hawes are operated by Procters (01677 425203)
WALKS START AT 10.30
FROM GARSDALE STATION on the Settle-Carlisle line. There are TWO walk
options. Before leaving the
station, walkers will divide into two groups, for a 10 mile walk or a 6
mile walk.
The 6 mile walk will
finish about 3pm, in time for passengers intending to catch the LWB and
train dep Garsdale at 16.16 to Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and Carlisle. The
10 mile walk will finish in time for all passengers intending to catch
the LWB and 17.27 train to Settle, Skipton and Leeds. Later trains and
the LWB allow more time in Hawes.
The 10 mile walk is
strenuous,
climbing up a steep hill after the first mile for a high level ridge
walk. On descending, the last mile or so is back along the valley
bottom, before reaching the Dales market town of Hawes. Please note that
this walk is an invigorating challenge – with fantastic views on a clear
day - although it can be quite blustery on top! It is
not
suitable for walkers who are unable to keep up a good pace with the
rest of the group.
The route of the 6
mile walk
runs along the same hillside as the 10 mile walk but at a lower contour.
There is time to pause, admire the spectacular scenery and take
photographs from a different perspective than the more usual views of
the dale. However it is stlll a 6 mile walk! At Mossdale Force – a
waterfall sketched by the artist JMW Turner when he visited the area in
1816 – there is time for a short rest on one of the seats on Yorkshire’s
Turner Trail (www.yorkshire.com/turner)
before reaching Hawes, the home of Wensleydale cheese.
To reach Garsdale
station for the start of the walks
(At
the station there is free car parking and public toilets, both on one
side of the track only; allow 5 minutes to walk round).
